Monitoring A Display AD

Postby SolomonF » Wed Nov 23, 2011 2:17 pm

We're paying to have a display ad show up on a commercial website, but it doesn't appear there regularly.

But we want to monitor that it appears at least once per hour? How can we do that with eValid?

One parameter you didn't mention is how often the website changes? Or even, how often you want to check the existence
of the ad?

Let's assume that the page updates once every 5 minutes and your Ad is supposed to show up on that page at least once in any 60-minute period. That is, at least once in every 12 updates of the page.

The monitoring task is simple enough: Run a test every 5 minutes, check to see that the Ad is present, or not, and keep track of the statistics.

Confirming a specific image is present is easy, because eValid has a Validate Image command that you can generate from the GUI. If that command fails, then the Ad is NOT where it is supposed to be. If it succeeds, then it is.

One slight issue is, how do you synchronize the tests so that you really do check the page the right number of times. However, if you are running your test of downloading the page and confirming a particular image match every 5 minutes, then you are OK in the long run.

Most common monitoring environments have the ability to send an alarm if your Ad doesn't appear in 12 successive tries. But you could also do that in a single evalid script using a batch-command line driven script run from the Windows scheduler.
