Tough questions!

First, who copied whom?

eValid technology was introduced in 2002 in the earliest public release, eValid Ver. 2. Much of the structural testing and DOM manipulation capabilities were added in 2007/2008 (version 8), and fully relized in Version 9. So, any project that began after that date inevitably "copied" or "adopted" the eValid approach. Being first has its advantages, and its disadvantages. But relative to WebDriver, eValid pre-dates it by at least 5 years.

Second, the real difference?

eValid is a commercially supported, proprietary product that has, in the prior decade pioneered the entire field of web application testing automation. By comparison, WebDriver, an open source solution that evolved from the Selenium solution, which in turn evolved from the WATIR solution, is not a supported product -- even though there are many organizations that are heavily invested in their own versions of the source. But if you come to WebDriver looking for an
out of the box solution, that'll only be true if you're prepared to invest a lot of programming and system configuration time. (eValid can install, run, create a test, and find a bug in less than an hour...as many users attest.)

Third (you didn't ask but we'll point it out anyway), eValid has many features that simply do not exist in WebDriver. GUI-based recording of AJAX synchronizations is just one such feature. Spidering of websites is another.

In the long run, you have to decide which of the two alternative approaches to testing web applications meets your individual needs.

We hope you choose eValid!
