If you are testing an AJAX application your probably need to have special syncronization points in your playback script, and these have to be able to read the current page's DOM tree to make sure playback does not de-synchronize.
As far as we can tell, for AJAX applications having the capability to do low-overhead DOM interrogations to achive playback synchronization is essential in doing server loading work. It's the only way you can assure realistic user sessions independent of the current load on the servers.
