Question on devices for web apps

Postby SharonG » Thu Sep 11, 2014 9:50 am

Hi.

I'd like to know, how wide is the variation between devices for web applications' source code?

Thanks for posting SharonG.

This is a question that comes up regularly when eValid users are applying eValid to either performance testing (how long pages or page components take) or to loading (how many devices can access a website at one time).

The short answer is that there is quite a bit of variation. Take a look at this page which shows some comparisons.

A lot depends on the server and how it's configured.

If the server is very smart about what it chooses to send to the client it will send significantly less information to browser running on a device that has limited capacity (a thin device) than it would send to a high-speed desktop machine (a thick device).

The reasons for this are obvious: to avoid having the user (a potential customer) having a bad experience!

On the other hand, if capacity (loading) is the question then in some cases the total number of open HTTP connections arising from a thin device may be the dominant factor in server capacity. In this case having many 100's or
1,000's of actual browsers running that effectively emulate all of those connections can be an important feature of your server loading experiment.
